Modding tutorials

Postby Actarus69 » 18 Apr 2023, 15:47

Hi everyone.

For the past few days I've been playing Single Tournament with my favorite player from the 80's, Mats Wilander.

Knowing him well having seen him play, I changed something in his character sheet, and in the future I will try to change his face to make it more similar.
But first I'd like to make him the 1988 outfit, that of the Australian Open and Roland Garros, and also the racket he played with, a Rossignol (I think it was the f200 carbon).

Since I certainly can't ask some modder to do it for me, I'd like to try it myself. Since it would be my first time, and being not so good at graphic work, just the basic stuff, is there any tutorial I could follow? Thank you all.

Hello

Following the Manutoo instructions indicated here: https://www.managames.com/Forum/topic60-33539.php I tried to modify an outfit, so first I extracted the archive, then loaded a random file into Gimp, and I chose the file .../Textures/Male.Shirt/06.png, but once loaded I didn't understand anything :(

How do I figure out which is the front, the back, the sleeves, the collar, of the shirt to be able to modify it? How do you know? There's a way? Thank you.

I personnaly find it pretty clear for most of the parts but the best option if you don't, is still to try. Try modifying a part of the outfit and check it out in game.
Male.shirt outfits are a bit more difficult to start with. Maybe a t-shirt is a bit easier for a start.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I've seen the t-shirts but they don't fit the shirt I want to make, a shirt that has a collar with buttons. I found the right file, it's .../Textures/Male.Shirt/09.png, and obviously I don't understand much, but as you told me, I was already trying to modify something and then see what it corresponds to in the game.

Of course doing this will take me a long time, but it's the only time for me to figure it out, and if I manage to make the outfit I want, I think it will be the only time I'll make outfits, too difficult for me :(

Thanks, this will help me :)
I hadn't thought of using this file because I mistakenly assumed that the Gimp doesn't read it, but it does read it :)

Update :)

After a week of hard work (just kidding, I only worked on it in my spare time) I think I've achieved a decent result :)
The most difficult thing was to find the images of the outfit I wanted to make, in fact I no longer have the magazines or vhs that I had at the time (35 years ago!), so I searched on the web.
I couldn't find the shoes so I chose a pair in the game that looked the closest, then for the racket I just created the logo on the strings. I also made logo cuffs and socks, and finally tweaked the face a bit but the resemblance isn't that great, it's very difficult.

For the benefit of those who are beginners like me and want to make an outfit, I will briefly explain what I did.
Of course I don't pretend that you have to do as I did, but since it's my first time and without consulting a guide because there aren't any, I left for an idea ;)

So, given that I used Gimp as my graphics program since I'm a Linux user, and thanks to user Burned who reminded me to use the UV mapping for the shirt, here's what I did:

1) With Gimp I deleted the green "grid" of the aforementioned file on everything, then I colored all the various parts that make up the shirt in white. By doing so I created a base for let's say future shirts that I want to make;

2) Thanks to the images of the outfit found on the web, I started drawing and trying and trying again by launching the game every time to see how it turned out, and also once to find out what some parts of the shirt corresponded to;

3) Once I made the shirt (exported in .png and in a separate file) I continued with the shorts, cuffs, socks here too, deleting the "grid" if there was one, and coloring in white, always in the respective UV mapping files, and then always drawn and tested, then saved separately, always in .png files;

4) Once the outfit was finished, I dedicated myself to the racket string logo, and here I acted differently: I loaded a file of racket strings, and replaced it with my own;

5) Finally I tried to make the character look like the player, but as I said before it didn't come out so well.

Of course I said decent result, I'm not a modder, and I certainly made some mistakes, but since it's my first outfit I feel satisfied, even if to tell the truth I'm still trying to improve it because of some things, like the logo on the shirt it always comes out wrong on the game :( while in the drawing it is straight.

I would like to try to make a face, but I think it's very difficult. The animations, on the other hand, are not really what, only a real modder could do them.

Anyway here's a picture of the player:

Congrats on your results!! really nice results considering it's your first attempt! Thanks for sharing the process, hopefully it'll encourage more people to try this out!

I really admire 3d artist of any form (clothes, faces, animations) since it's a skill that I do not have!

And btw, there is no such thing as 'real' modder, you are as of now a real modder!!! I hope you continue to deliver us with more outfits and faces, and I'm sure that if you set your mind, you can make animations!!

Actarus69,
I think you don't have to restart the game to see a change in a texture ; ie: just select the next T-shirt and then come back to your T-shirt, and it should be reloaded. :yes:

And as Fed1 said, if you created a Mod for the game, even a small one, then you're a Modder, congratz..! :applause:

Fed1 and Manutoo thanks for the nice words :oops:
and Manu I'll do that next time, thanks for the tip :)

I wanted to add something and clarify some points of my previous post, always for the benefit of someone who wants to make an outfit. So, the first thing is knowing how to use a graphics program well, nowadays they are so powerful that you can do anything. In my case I rarely use Gimp, and I didn't remember some things and I went to review them, also to learn something more that would have been useful to me.

Then you don't need to draw everything from scratch if you can do it sooner ;)
Also in my case, for example, I drew the stripes on the shoulders of the shirt from scratch, but not the logo. I tried to tell the truth but it never worked out for me, so I googled an image that was freely downloadable and editable, and I found it.
When I said I created the logo on the shirt, cuffs, shorts, and socks, I meant that on the downloaded logo I had to do in order: add a transparency, change the size (several times), change its color, cut it out exactly, tilt it if it was the case or leave it straight, and if I had to tilt it by how much it should be (tried several times), and above all understand well where to paste it. So in a sense let's say I "created" it, but it would be more accurate to say I modified it to my needs.

This is to say that in my opinion anyone can try to make an outfit, as long as you have some time, know how to use the right tools of a graphics program, and even if you are not good at designing today's programs help much like said before. To tell the truth, I started off with a bit of an advantage because I've always liked drawing since I was a boy, but I always have little time to do it. However I remain of my idea that anyone can do it :)

I don't know if I'm really a modder, but I enjoyed making the outfit. Now I'm trying to improve it a bit, always in my spare time. And maybe do the 1988 US Open outfit too. And then I'd like to make a face, I've seen your UV mapping but I have to figure out how to do it, it'll take a while. And I always hope to find shoes so I can finally design them (for AO, RG, and USO).

Hello

I put the USO '88 outfit on standby and now I'm dedicating myself to making the 2021 Italian national team outfit which I really like :)
Yesterday I finished the t-shirt but I want to improve it a bit, then later I'll make the shorts, the socks, and maybe even the tricolor cuffs even if I don't like them that much. Finally I will also make another version (different color) of the t-shirt and shorts. It will obviously take some time.

Always for the benefit of beginners like me, I tell you about the various steps I took to make the t-shirt, and I always add that I don't expect it to be done as I do, it's simply a method, let's say, on how it could be done. I still add that I'm continuing to learn, even making mistakes of course, but I'm having a lot of fun :D

Well, given that I always use Gimp, and that I already have the images of the t-shirt:

1) I loaded the UV mapping file of the t-shirt, deleted the green "grid" as for the shirt and then colored everything in white (except the background of course), then saved in png format in a separate file;

2) Then from the image of the t-shirt downloaded with the Gimp pick color tool I took the color of the t-shirt and saved it in the color palette;

3) Filled the previously saved t-shirt with this new color;

4) Then drawn the collar of the t-shirt freehand;

5) From the downloaded image of the t-shirt I then "cut out" the logo and the writing, I made them transparent, and saved them in two separate files always in png;

Note 1: with these cut and made transparent files, before saving them I had to separate the logo (and the writing) from the background, and with Gimp there are various ways to do it. This time I used the eraser tool and it took a lot of patience…

6) Then pasted the cut files first on the t-shirt, trying and trying again until I was satisfied with the result;

7) Finally I saved the t-shirt with a new name and still in png, then launched the game and checked if it saw the new t-shirt and if it turned out well :)

Note 2: I saved the file I was working on many times, and if I was making or needed to make a big change, I saved it first by adding a version number, for example tshirt-01.png, tshirt-02.png, etc.

That's all for now, I don't know what this topic of mine is becoming, I started asking for a tutorial and now it seems I'm doing it :D but I have no pretensions in doing this, I'm simply a user who is learning and is a amateur, but I like to share with others like me his results and to share the various steps I took to get there. I will never stop thanking Manutoo for this wonderful game :)

Here are the images of the t-shirt:

Re: Modding tutorials

Postby Actarus69 » 07 May 2023, 18:25

Hello

Finally finished the Italy national team outfit of 2021 :)
I found big problems designing the shoes, I don't know how many times I redid them, and even now I'm not happy with the result, I probably should redo them again and again :sweat: I found this very boring, better the other parts like the t-shirt :D
However I did everything: t-shirt, socks, cuffs, shorts, and as mentioned shoes.

As for the procedure used, it is always the same, that is to say remove the green "grid" of the UV mapping files and color the parts white, and save them in a separate png file. Only for the shoes I didn't do it because there is a ready file similar to the UV mapping one but without the grid. Then I drew, and always saved in png.

Now I would always like to do an outfit of the Italian national team but from 2023, or other shirts from 2021, or go back to doing the USO '88 Wilander outfit :thinking: I'll see when I have time.

Anyway, here is the final result:

Hi, small update.

I've been a bit busy lately, so I haven't had time to do modding, but in the last few weeks I've made a purchase that I'll need, in fact I bought a graphics tablet and I'm practicing using it when I can :)

I hope to be more free in the next few days and therefore start making outfits for Wilander and the Italian team.
